Oriental Painting Course "A Structured Practical Guide to Painting Skills and Techniques Of" Wang Jainan 9780823033898 Books Reviews
- Excellent book on Oriental Brush Painting. It gives so much in depth information on why this style of painting is so much different from western styles of painting. It gives you the history and the theory. Many books give you little simple demonstrations but this gives you good information on composition, the use of calligraphy and a chop on the painting etc. It also gives contemporary examples so you don't always have to go back to the Ming Dynasty for examples. You have to be a bit of a scholar and not just a shallow student of this style to appreciate what this book teaches you. I've been doing this style of painting for 20 years and I still often refer to this book.
- Great book ... pics and step by step instructions for individual subjects......... flowers and birds.... trees and rocks... landscapes....etc...
- This is a very interesting book, with lots of nice reference material and inspirering pictures. It isn't the best teaching book, but it still helps to have around, if for nothing else at least a great visual interest book. Despite all the confusing reviews about it being a good and not so good book, I would still reccomend it. It is worth the inspirational pictures alone. I still find it a magnetic book to pick up and look at and read, even though I haven't found it very instructional.
- Our teacher recommended this book for our sumi botanical class, I found it fascinating for the history. Great basics.
- Book has beautiful photos and examples to help get you started.
- Each art book have their specific objectives. Some are encyclopedic historical overviews of the art, others briefer; some focused on brushstrokes & calligraphy, others the art portfolio of various artists or exhibitions; some with a craft bent, others painstaking traditional gongbi style manual with formal traditional step by step progression of instruction with illustration.
This manual is none of the above BUT nevertheless a great repertoire broadening introduction into Chinese Brush Painting with 24 "Projects" Lessons that illustrates how the traditional techniques can be applied for contemporary styles. It's not an instruction book on gongbi or xie yi in the traditional sense although in the lessons these are applied, but it is strong on idea and application expansion for the uninitiated new artist. I am new so I like it.
After a brief overview, which includes the four treasures it advices on the type of equipment one needs before embarking on 24 lessons - each comprising an attempt at the different styles of Chinese painting with a considerable focus on the contemporary using the authors'own work as examples. This book is light on the traditional masterpieces though some are included for illustration.
Using this book to showcase the authors' artwork (ingenious) by using them as examples, this manual shows to a certain extent HOW it's done but not in too much detail, applying old techniques to contemporary chinese art. The book is fascinating for the beginner, covering traditional yet including a broad sample of contemporary art. Unless already in the artworld, one finds one's artistic horizons are broadened through the process. I like it but I also have a host of other books to complete my requirements. Great if one is a hobbyist, these projects are like the curriculum of an art semester of "experimentation".
Great that for each project the author provides a list of brushes that are required. In that sense that is helpful. However a little light on in instruction, I feel the author could be EVEN more detailed in his explanation on HOW a particular art effect is achieved on the xuan, esp where a sample artwork is included, having said that gems are strewn within the book that is much appreciated. upgrade to 5 stars.
Current copy is borrowed from the library. Will I buy it. Very tempted. In fact, I think I will. - If I had to recommend one oriental painting book, this would be it. It includes the most information and the clearest explanations. It is also in full-color and has many beautiful illustrations throughout.
First, the book covers materials including how to choose papers, brushes, and inks. I found the photos of each brush to be very helpful. It then teaches you to how to hold the brush correctly make basic Asian characters.
There are wonderful step-by-step demonstrations on painting bamboo, orchids, wisteria, chysanthemums, plum blossoms various animals. Also covered are various landscape elements, water types, buildings, figures.
The book also covers qi, color, composition, perspective, mounting your artwork and using seals. Some historical information and a glossary in the back are great bonuses. - Very impressed by the quality of the book which was as described. It arrived promptly as promised. Thank you.
