- I pre-ordered this book before publication, even though I didn't have a lot of hope for quality -- there are VERY few books about old age and aging 'out there'. In fact, I tried to cancel my order, but the book shipped before I could. Good thing. Wow, it is a GREAT book! It is so good I don't even know where to begin. What I will say is I hope to devote at least an hour a week to the info in this book, and it will probably take me two years to exhaust it all. If you are 65+, you need to get this book. If you are 50+ and are in bad health, you need to get this book. In fact, I think I'm going to order this book for my friends (mostly 65+). And, no, I don't know the author at all, and, no, no one paid me to write a great review. And thank you, Ms. Loverde!
- My husband and I don’t have kids. Finally, now that we are in our mid-forties, people have stopped asking when we will. But for a very long time, when we indicated that we didn’t have children, people—even strangers—would inquire, “But who will be there for you when you get older?†Frequently my response was, “We have long term care insurance,†with a smile. That usually shut down the conversation.
Of course, such discussions have always reminded me that our older adulthood will differ from peers who will have adult children, grandchildren and possibly even great-grandchildren. While having children does not guarantee anyone a caregiver someday, we know that we may have less social support than other older adults.
Because of this, when I first heard about Joy Loverde’s new book Who Will Take Care of Me When I’m Old?, I immediately said to my husband, “We need this book.†I’m thrilled to report that this book is much more than what I was expecting. While Loverde recognizes our situation, she also reminds the reader that thinking ahead about who will support you in old age is not just an issue for the childless. Even those with many adult children should be proactive in developing a robust social network for their later years.
Loverde covers practical ideas such as how to become better at socializing (even if you consider yourself shy) so you can enjoy more social support. She also offers provocative ideas like having a funeral before you die. Repeatedly while reading Who Will Take Care of Me When I’m Old, I found myself thinking, “I never thought of that before!â€
Though I was initially personally interested in Who Will Take Care of Me When I’m Old, professionally I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone who wants to have a more fulfilling aging experience.
Jennifer L. FitzPatrick, MSW, CSP, author of Cruising Through Caregiving Reducing The Stress of Caring For Your Loved One - I am a 72 yr old male. So the "when" in the title could easily, for me, be "now that". This book is a highly comprehensative treatise for everyone approaching the time of their lives when they will need to consider modifying their lifestyle. It provides in depth research and links to organizations that can assist in this time of transition. After reading this book I imm, ediately began to take steps and make changes in preparation for the best years that are ahead. I Strongly recomend this book not only to the obvious primary target audience but those who will be effected (possible caregivers). Spoiler Alert! Two main themes I took away...Financial security will provide you with "options" and mimimize stress levels and secondly, something even more profound, make sure you have a deep network of friends, neighbors, and relatives. They will provide both physical help as well as emotional support. Aging well requires that we maintain an adequate level of happiness. Keeping "pleasure", retaining "pride", and "purpose" are the key elements. This book reveals the pathways to aging well.
- This is a bible for how to prepare for old age—a topic seldom discussed as we march into older age. Joy Loverde has written a practical and meaningful guide as to how to intentionally prepare for this life chapter. Filled with meaningful guidance and information, this book needs to belong to anyone looking forward to a well planned later life. Haven’t read it? How about a copy today!
- Very good. A bit overwhelming. You have to use it as a bible---reading sections over and over to be sure
you have the information you need to recall when you decide to take action on your aging. Not an easy task.
But this book does give you an excellent start--even if you don't want to do it........... - The book is amazing in so many ways.It provided valuable information on every part of the aging process along with all the resources needed for caretakers to dispense to their loved ones so they can make a comfortable transition in whatever life stage they are in the aging process.I also loved the candid but kind message that being proactive in your aging process allows one to prepare for our own needs rather than allowing family members to make decisions that that they may feel burdened with because they had to guess what their loved ones wanted.
There is so much information in this book that it will become My Bible, where I will visit, and take comfort as one does an old friend. You will not be disappointed. - As an author, a work-life professional, and now approaching the age the book is written for, I appreciate the depth, resources, and practical information. Everyone approaching retirement, as well as pre-retirement, should read this. I wish I had this book when my mother was alive. It would have helped both of us navigate the end of her life.
Bonnie Michaels, co-author of Upside How to Zig When Life Zabs - Good workbook and reads well. I wish I had found this when I was 40 or 50 instead of over 70.
