Fun and Friendly Calligraphy for Kids A HandsOn Guide to Creative Lettering Virginia Lucas Hart 9781612437224 Books Reviews

  • I got this for my niece because it reminded me of all the Pinterest accounts she follows and because she's crafty. What a good call! She has been using it all the time to make binders for her friends, do lettering on school projects, and address her birthday party invitations and thank-you's. The author's style is a much more modern version of the calligraphy you might remember as a kid. It's got spunk and room for personality-- it really fits with the current aesthetic. I'm so happy I got her this book--she now knows a ton of terms I don't like "ascendant" and "x-hegit"-- she sounds like a mathematician. I could really see this book sparking a hobby for the right kind of kid.
  • This is a very complete book about calligraphy. The author has excellent descriptions of the tools needed, the technique of writing each letter, the guidelines of writing, the strokes and the letterforms. She also stressed finding your own style once you have mastered calligraphy. There are several pages to practice on that can be copied. There are many practice and warmup skills. Calligraphy is a lost art. If you acquire this skill, the applications are endless. It can be a hobby, become a career or something used just once in awhile. Calligraphy can be use with making greeting cards, scrapbooking, graphic arts, or just doodling. This is the most thorough teaching book I have seen.
  • This book is really content heavy, so at times it's a little overwhelming, but, I find that is because it really is a complete and concise guide for children to get creative with cailgraphy. It's a hard concept when it comes to caligraphy, especially for kids, because you've been taught all your life to write your letters. Caligraphy is a whole new apparoach as it actually wants you to draw your letters. This book does an amazing job helping explain how to make the magic happen, for those of you who are type A, get excited, because the reviews are quite detailed. I mean, who knew that the dot over an i and j is called a title. The did you know (kind of like a fun facts) were super awesome and fun to discover. I love the color and feel of the glossy pages. The imagery was an added bonus and made it a lot easier to digest all of the content. Not only do you learn the act of caligraphy in this book, but you really get to learn the details and history of the meaning of caligraphy. This is a great book, I would honestly get it for a novice in caligraphy - child or adult. This is a great book for enhancing your knowledge.
  • I received my copy of this wonderful book today and absolutely love it! As a public school teacher, I am impressed by the fact that this book is written in such a way that children will be having fun and learning so much at the same time. I bought a copy for the classroom but now I am buying more copies for holiday gifts!
  • Reading this book, I was struck by how detailed it is. It is not just a trace guide and it doesn’t just show you a couple of things and the rest of the book is just blank practice pages. It is detailed throughout the whole process of calligraphy - From different writing instruments, what erasers to use and how to save your work from possible mistakes, to how to sit, how to train with excercises, going into different styles of calligraphy, even perfecting your signature and adding flourishes. This is the most comprehensive calligraphy book I think I've seen and it is marketed to kids. It's definitely not just for kids. The information is covered in such a way that a kid could pick it up and understand it, but it is also a wonderful learning guide for any age. The author, Virginia Lucas Hart, did a great job putting this book together and you can tell that she really knows what she is talking about. Whether learning or referencing and practicing, this is a great book to have on-hand.
  • I got this for my 10 year old granddaughter who loves to draw. It is a gift so she hasn't had a chance to use it yet but I thought she would be able to understand the directions.
  • This book is very well written! It’s incredibly organized and relevant and very well thought out. For anyone wanting to learn the art of calligraphy, this book is an absolute must. The Author, Virginia Hart-McAnaney is well known as a professional calligrapher and is a true artist.
  • I like that my 11yr. old grandson can understand the book and is doing well with it.
