"This is a wonderful, detailed portrayal of my favorite college football team. This is a must read for any UW football fan. I grew up a Husky fan and the first game I attended was the 1960 UW-Oregon game. The Huskies won as time was running out when Don McKeta took a short pass down the sideline for the score. I remember that play like it was yesterday. I was 10 years old at the time. It was a trip back through time to read about the genesis of this Husky team and their journey to the top. I didn't realize Jim Owens was only 47 when he stepped down as head coach in 1974. I was a UW med student at the time and it seemed that he had been at the helm forever. These were the teams that put UW football on the map. Thank you, Thomas Porter, for writing this book."

  • I remember very well when the Huskies pulled ahead of USC. There was so much noise it was impossible to hear Wendell Broyles on the public address. The Trojans came back to win but the crowd gave the home team a standing ovation. After that the hope seemed to grow each week could the Dawgs keep it together? And the Rose Bowl. I remember thinking they might win by maybe three points. But 44-8? (notice how similar that is to the Seahawk score in last season's Super Bowl). Then the following year. That UCLA game when the Huskies repeatedly turned back challenges by the Bruins in the fourth quarter. Schloredt had been hurt but Hivner showed 'em how it was done. And the come from behind wins that followed against the Beavers and the Ducks (and later the Cougars). And to top it off another Rose Bowl win, this time against number one (ha) Minnesota. And McKeta leading the charge! That man could do just about anything
Those were the days. Thanks, guys. You were all great and you still are.
  • I have been a football coach for over 25 years. A Football Band of Brothers is the best football book I have ever read and I have read a bunch of them
